Propecia is an androgen hormone inhibitor used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) which is an enlarged prostate. Your doctor may prescribe this medicine for other conditions as well.

How Drug Works

Finasteride shrinks the prostate and relieves symptoms like: difficult urination.

How Taken

This medicine can be taken with or without food. This medicine may be crushed if needed to swallow. Follow the directions for taking this medicine provided by your doctor or pharmacist. This medicine should be taken at the same time everyday. The recommended dose for BPH is 5 mg once daily.

Possible Side Effects

Warnings/Precautions

Any women who is pregnant or who may become pregnant should NOT handle crushed or broken tablets of this medicine. If you are pregnant and have come in contact with broken tablets, contact your doctor as soon as possible. Finasteride should NOT be used in pediatric patients. It may take up to 6 to 12 months for this medicine to work. Do NOT stop taking this medicine without first talking to your doctor.

Overdose

For emergencies, seek medical attention immediately. For non emergencies, contact your local or regional poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.

Drug Interactions

Before taking any other medications, either prescription or over-the-counter, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Missed Dose

Take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.

Storage

Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).

Pregnancy/Nursing

Talk to your doctor or pediatrician before using this medicine while nursing. Use during pregnancy should only occur if the potential benefits outweigh the possible risk to the fetus.
